After the Scotsman secured a 13th Premier League title two weeks ago – extending the club’s record English championship haul to 20 – he declared that he had no retirement thoughts.

But now he has just two more matches left in charge of the club he has turned into one of the world’s biggest sports teams.

“It was important to me to leave an organization in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so,” Ferguson said. “The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.”

Ferguson will stay at the club as a director and an ambassador.

“In the first half, I didn’t think the referee dealt at all well with the intimidating challenges, and it was detrimental to the fluency of our game, but we responded well and we had fantastic commitment.

“Yes, I thought Gibson should have been sent off – he should have had a yellow card already before the first one.

“The referee has to make the right decisions, but you have to respect the effort Everton put in. They decided to make it very physical for us to disturb our game and sometimes went over the edge.”

Moyes added: “You can never be disappointed taking a point at the Emirates and we more than deserved it.

“We didn’t do enough to win the game, but the players knew what was at stake and it wasn’t for a lack of effort. They went at full tilt to get a result.

“We weren’t going to come here and let Arsenal stroke the ball around and make 600 passes.”
