The England Midfielder became the club’s all-time leading scorer last week, but his existing deal was due to expire at the end of this season.

“I’m absolutely delighted. Everybody knows I always maintained the dream to stay,” the 34-year-old said.

“I want to thank Mr Abramovich for making the dream a reality. I love this club, the staff, the players and especially the supporters.”

Ron Gourlay, Chelsea FC Chief Executive, said: ‘Frank has been an important player for Chelsea Football Club for a long time and has played a significant part in the club’s success.

‘We have been talking to him since the end of last year and our discussions have been entirely positive throughout. We are delighted we are now announcing an extension to his contract which will keep him at the club until 2014.’

Lampard added: ‘I’m absolutely delighted. Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. We’ve been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period it was always amicable.

Lampard became the club’s record goalscorer amid wonderful scenes at Villa Park last Saturday when he surpassed Bobby Tambling

‘s 202 goals, an incredible feat for a midfielder.

Rooney is valued at £40m by United, so if a serious offer was made for him this may at least be explored. United are interested in bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, from Real Madrid, so the potential transfer of Rooney would help finance any deal.

The Scot, 71, has won 38 trophies during his reign at Old Trafford and will now become a director and ambassador for the club.

His haul includes 13 league titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time,” Ferguson said on United’s website (www.manutd.com).

After the Scotsman secured a 13th Premier League title two weeks ago – extending the club’s record English championship haul to 20 – he declared that he had no retirement thoughts.

But now he has just two more matches left in charge of the club he has turned into one of the world’s biggest sports teams.

“It was important to me to leave an organization in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so,” Ferguson said. “The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.”

Ferguson will stay at the club as a director and an ambassador.

In 2010 he was banned for seven games for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal’s shoulder, when he played for Ajax in Holland.

In that game Suarez was arguing with Bakkal who then stood on his foot.
Cardiff will join fellow Welsh side, and sworn rivals, Swansea City in the Premier League next season, when there will be two teams from Wales in the English top flight for the first time.

History was on Cardiff’s side against Charlton. The Welsh club were last promoted to the top flight 53 years ago to the day, following a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in front of 52,364 at Ninian Park. Cardiff have since moved home and the crowd was half that number here but the sense of excitement was tangible. Premier League scarves – “Up where we belong” – were on sale outside the stadium and there was a buzz inside, where Cardiff fans chanted about competing with Swansea next season, albeit not quite in those words.

Arsenal & Everton tunnel bust-up: Mirallas squirts drink at Wilshere tunnel bust-up: Mirallas squirts drink at Wilshere

“I didn’t see it. I know someone who says that quite a lot…” — David Moyes when asked post-match about the half-time bust-up between Arsenal and Everton players.

It was a gritty 0-0 draw at the Emirates on Tuesday night that might be seen as a crucial point come the end of the campaign for Arsenal and Everton respectively.

There were plenty of crunching challenges particularly in the first half with Everton testing the limits of their opponents with the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere forced off for treatment.

It then boiled just as the players reached the tunnel when Kevin Mirallas squirted his drink at Jack Wilshere.

Cue a meless involving both Arsenal and Everton players but the cameras didn’t get the best angle in the tunnel.

Gunner’s Jack Wilshere was squirted in the face with a water bottle in a tunnel fracas as tempers boiled over at the Emirates.

The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger claimed Everton midfielder Darron Gibson should have been sent off, while counterpart David Moyes scoffed: “Were we a little bit rough? Up north, we tackle like that quite often.

“That’s actually allowed in football.”

Inevitably, Wenger claimed he did not see the flashpoint.

Image Source : Mirror, Sky Sports

He said: “If it was on TV, very soon everybody will know about it.

“Basically, the game was very intense physically.

“In the first half, I didn’t think the referee dealt at all well with the intimidating challenges, and it was detrimental to the fluency of our game, but we responded well and we had fantastic commitment.

“Yes, I thought Gibson should have been sent off – he should have had a yellow card already before the first one.

“The referee has to make the right decisions, but you have to respect the effort Everton put in. They decided to make it very physical for us to disturb our game and sometimes went over the edge.”

Moyes added: “You can never be disappointed taking a point at the Emirates and we more than deserved it.

“We didn’t do enough to win the game, but the players knew what was at stake and it wasn’t for a lack of effort. They went at full tilt to get a result.

“We weren’t going to come here and let Arsenal stroke the ball around and make 600 passes.”

Jose Mourinho is set to turn his back on a return Chelsea this summer – and stay at Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Real Madrid, who have secured a place in the Champions League semi-final and avoided a clash with arch-rivals Barcelona, are disturbed by speculation linking Mourinho with a move away from the Bernabeu.

So much so, that even Mourinho admitted this week that speculation is doing him and the club no good and he intends to sit down with the Real Madrid president Florentino Perez at the end of the current campaign.

Despite a disappointing league campaign following last season’s triumph in La Liga, Mourinho is still highly thought of inside the Bernabeu and adored by the fans.

And sources close to Mourinho claim he is happy in Madrid and planning to see out his contract.
