The German side are desperate to keep their star striker after losing Bundesliga player of the year Shinji Kagawa to Manchester United, and are said to have already rejected a £17m offer from Stamford Bridge.

But ESPN say Roberto Di Matteo may go back for the man Chelsea who hit 22 in 34 league games last season as his side clinched the domestic double.

A source told them: “Chelsea have been offered Cavani, but not everybody at the club thinks he is the right player to suit their formation. The Polish centre-forward is the one the club bid for, but the offer was rejected.”Manchester United were also sniffing around Lewandowski, but a potential bid has been stalled by their declared interest in Arsenal’s Robin van Persie.

However they may revive their tracking of Lewandowski now Old Trafford sources are conceding they may be priced out of the RvP chase.
